The party didn’t end.
It just came home.

If you were out in the 80s and 90s, you already know what we’re on about. The getting ready took as long as the night out. The taxi had two more people in it than it should have. And at some point, a song came on that turned a room full of strangers into one enormous singalong.

Nobody ever announced that it was over. There was no final night, no farewell tour. It just quietly got harder to arrange. Somewhere between the mortgage, the school run and the 6am alarm, “are we out Saturday?” turned into a group chat where everyone agrees it would be lovely and nobody picks a date.

Grown up, not grown out of it

Here’s the thing though. Nothing about you actually changed. You still know every word. You still turn it up when the right one comes on in the car, with the kids in the back asking what this is. Give you a wedding reception at half ten at night and you’ll be the one still going when the twenty-somethings have gone to sit down.

The want never left. It just ran out of places to go. Responsibilities got in the way of the big night out, and that’s fine — but it was never supposed to mean no more nights at all.

So we made it easy to bring the night home

Proper Party began with a simple belief: if the big nights out are harder to come by, the celebrations shouldn’t vanish with them. The disco didn’t die. It moved into living rooms, gardens, village halls and function rooms up and down the country. What those nights were missing was never the people or the music. It was the sense of occasion — the bit that used to start hours before you left the house.

Fancy dress was never the answer. It’s expensive, it takes planning nobody has time for, and it means spending the evening trapped inside something you can’t sit down in. So we put the theme on the one thing everybody is wearing anyway: a good tee. Soft cotton, prints that land, and sizes for everyone in the group so nobody feels left out of the photo. Ten minutes of effort, and the whole room looks like it means it.

That is the bit we like best about them. Wear one on its own and you’re dressed for the theme with no costume in sight. Build a full get-up around it — wig, hat, jacket, the lot — and it works just as well as the layer underneath. And when the night’s over it goes in the drawer with the rest of your clothes rather than the loft, because underneath the print it’s just a good tee. A costume gets one outing, costs you more for the privilege, and you spend half the evening wishing you could take it off.

Every themed party thrown at home is a small act of defiance against a quiet night in front of the telly. We love that.
